There are short compositions in all types of music: pop, rock, jazz, folk, classical music… you name it.

Traditionally art songs were created for performance with piano accompaniment. Famous are those written by Franz Schubert who used a simple strophic form as if it was folk music.

Billy Joel, one of the most talented pianists and songwriters in pop music, became popular with Piano Man, which was a massive hit in the early Seventies. In its lyrics Joel writes with subtlety about the comfort people find in piano music.
